In its fifth year at the Monterey Institute, TEDxMonterey thrilled and inspired over 300 attendees on Saturday, celebrating a day of ideas worth spreading, around the theme of “Edges.“
The focus of the first Monterey Institute Community Innovation Challenge was on addressing Monterey County’s serious water challenges, with five students teaming up for the winning proposal and receiving a $2,500 award.
TEDxMonterey “Edges” and Earth Week@MIIS 2014 at the Monterey Institute kicked off this Saturday with the construction on campus of a geodesic dome that is made entirely of sustainable materials and will function as a hub for activities associated with both events.
Noted political scientist and economist Dr. Francis Fukuyama will give a public lecture in the Monterey Institute’s Irvine Auditorium on Friday, April 18 to discuss “Economic Diplomacy and Global Governance in a Multi-polar World.”
Fifteen Monterey Institute students had the opportunity to experience the real-world issues, impacts and policy implications of the Shanghai Free Trade Zone during a specially designed immersive learning course that one described as “life-changing.”
Monterey Institute alumna Tricia Bean shares her love of language and interest in other cultures with her students at Carmel High School, while also collaborating regularly with the Institute: “I enjoy being able to give back to the institution that has given me so much.”
Monterey Institute students have partnered with seven local community organizations this spring, working with them on diverse projects as part of a new service-learning course that teaches program design by merging theory with practice.
