Our Master of Arts in International Education Management (IEM) curriculum is specifically designed to give you professional experience before you graduate, culminating in a semesterlong practicum working for an international education organization. Many students turn their practicum into full-time job offers.

We offer both an in-person, full-time degree and an asynchronous online program so you can continue to work as you earn your degree. The faculty, curriculum, and per-credit cost are the same for both versions of the program so you will have the flexibility to study online or in person, or easily switch between the two experiences as your personal and professional needs allow.

The Middlebury Institute is quite different from other schools because it has a very practitioner focus. We’re a professional graduate school and a Master’s Degree institution. Our curriculum’s shaped around the needs of the field and the needs of the profession, and it’s what we emphasize for our students.
The International Education Management Program was very appealing to me because of how hands-on it is, and how practical it is for what I want to do. I had such a great experience being an international student and studying abroad in Germany that I really want to help facilitate other experiential learning experiences for new generations of students, and the International Education Management Program is the perfect way to achieve that goal.
If you’re going to work in a non-profit or a study abroad program, it’s different from the standpoint that much of your revenue is going to be coming directly from participants in your program.
So, my favorite class is Marketing and Recruiting class and the Program Design Assessment class. Because those class allow us to work with a real client, and not only help us to build a relationship with our supervisors in the future, but also allow to get some hands on practice skills.
Through immersive learning funding, my partner and I were able to go to Spain this summer in order to do a site visit with the school. And that was an amazing opportunity because we were able to really get a sense for the unique components of the school itself and really get a better idea seeing first hand what the school had to offer. We continued that into the semester for our other required course which is Marketing and Recruiting. And we’re working with that same school in southern Spain to market and recruit the program that we designed originally last semester.
We will be sending our full time counselor, Katelyn Lampton, to attend a pre-conference training. And after she attends this training she will be qualified to give a-
You’re on campus for two semesters doing academic coursework. And then your third semester you’re still doing academic course work, but you’re in your practicum, so it’s a work opportunity.
They’re working as an employee or as an intern with an organization, and they’re doing projects where they use their on campus learning and apply it in that work place setting, in the organizational setting.
Right now, I’m interning at the Berkeley International Office. I am working with the international students advisors. For the programming for international students, we want to ensure international students have a holistic experience at the US, so both academic but also personal growth.
The faculty are always available to help with anything, whether it be assignments for class or right now I’ll be looking for my practicum, so an internship or work experience.
I really see the professors not only as educators, but also as colleagues and as mentors, and really there to help facilitate the learning that you’re here trying to get.
If you’re interested in really getting into the field and getting the experience necessary for starting a career in international education, then this program is definitely for you.
We integrate your career and academic advising, making sure your coursework aligns with your career goals. The same advisor will guide you from course registration to preparing for interviews and negotiating new career opportunities.
In your final semester, you will gain professional experience through a semesterlong practicum, which can be a paid internship in the U.S. or abroad. The COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on international education, but our students and graduates are still in high demand from employers. Our recent cohorts continue to secure meaningful and career-related positions. We also prepare you for careers in international education beyond study abroad.
The IEM program has a particular focus on community building. Our faculty, staff, and alumni are actively involved in mentoring current students and helping them develop as leaders.

Throughout your studies at the Middlebury Institute, you will work closely with professors and international education organizations on real-world consulting projects, including marketing, recruiting, program design, and assessment.

As the field of international education faces the rise of online instruction and the challenges of travel-dependent programs, we prepare you to manage sustainability in new ways. We integrate environmental justice with DEI efforts. We address global concerns, such as the carbon footprint of international programs, as well as financial sustainability, community sustainability, and personal sustainability. You will learn to responsibly leverage all of your resources—including technology, partnerships, funding, personnel, and personal abilities—to adapt and evolve for the future, thinking globally and acting locally.
The program offers experiential learning opportunities to help you gain deeper perspectives of international education outside of the U.S. and to practice language and intercultural skills. In the past, our students have taken courses in countries including Spain, France, Rwanda, and Cuba. These international opportunities vary from year to year and are available to online students.
Bridging cultural and linguistic barriers is key to a successful career in international education, so you will take content courses in a second language and/or courses in intercultural competence.
Our flexible curriculum gives you opportunities to customize your degree through switching between in-person and online options, taking part-time or full-time course loads, studying career-related topics in a second language, taking intercultural competence courses, and being able to choose optional specializations, a professional practicum, and joint degrees. Admission requirements for our in-person IEM program are the same as for the online IEM program. We do not require GRE or GMAT scores for our master’s programs, but competitive scores may strengthen your application and positively influence scholarship decisions. Learn how to apply.
