Learning Goals
The Master of Arts in Nonproliferation and Terrorism Studies provides the knowledge and practical skills to prepare students for professional careers addressing security threats posed by terrorism and nuclear, biological, chemical, and radiological weapons.
Research and Analysis

Ability to analyze potential threats involving terrorism and proliferation of weapons of mass destruction (WMD).

Ability to evaluate policies and strategies for combating terrorism and WMD proliferation.

Ability to design and carry out original research and critically evaluate research produced via different research methods, both qualitative and quantitative.
Communication: Oral and Written

Ability to communicate ideas effectively in a variety of written formats.

Ability to give briefings and other presentations to a wide variety of audiences.

Competency in at least one additional language sufficient to do professional work.
Subject-Matter Expertise and Practical Skills

Knowledge of the history and leading theories of WMD proliferation and terrorism.

Familiarity with the major policy tools for combating terrorism and proliferation, including the international nonproliferation regime.

Understanding of the technologies and underlying scientific principles involved in the production of WMD and the capabilities and limitations of different types of WMD.

Basic understanding of global politics and the leading theories of international relations.

Added expertise in related areas for students who choose to deepen knowledge or skills in a particular direction, such as the history and politics of one or more regions where there are concerns about terrorism or WMD proliferation; emerging security issues such as cyber security, proliferation financing, or terrorism financing; and analytical tools such as geospatial imagery or social network analysis.
