Cap and gowns are NOT required to participate in the commencement ceremony. If you would like to order keepsake regalia, you can place an order through Oak Hall. Find order and pricing information below.

Attire

Please note cap and gown regalia is NOT mandatory for the ceremony; many students opt to wear traditional, cultural dress or appropriate business attire. If you opt to wear a cap and gown, please wear business attire under your gown as this is a formal occasion. The mortarboard is worn flat and straight on your forehead. Safety pins and bobby pins will be available but it is best to bring your own if possible.

For master’s candidates, the tassel goes on the left to signify previous possession of an academic degree. For bachelor’s candidates, the tassel is worn on the right side before the degree is conferred; once the degree is conferred you will change the tassel from the right to the left side.

All Oak Hall regalia items are made out of 100 percent post-consumer recycled plastic bottles. For any questions related to ordering your regalia, contact rsvp@middlebury.edu.
