Renato De Medeiros and Manuela Silveira of Brazil are capitalizing on their language skills and background by pursuing degree programs at the Monterey Institute that fit their international career aspirations.

Manuela Silveira (MATLM ’14) is pioneering a new Portuguese language track within the Translation and Localization Management degree program at the Monterey Institute. She and her husband recently moved to Silicon Valley with their young sons so that he could accept a great job offer from Yahoo. Manuela was looking for a way to capitalize on her background in project management and experience marketing websites for the largest media company in Brazil, as well as her excellent language skills. “It was a hard mix to find,” she says, laughing, “but I was lucky enough to find it here at MIIS within commute distance.” The Translation and Localization Management program is organized around training in three areas: translation, technology, and business, and the new Portuguese language track could not be a better fit for Manuela’s aspirations for advancing her career.

Renato De Medeiros (MAIPS ’14) has already found a lot of new friends from all over the world at MIIS, and considering that his career goal is to build bridges between different cultures as an international policy expert, that has to be a good sign. He is very excited about his classes in the Human Security and Development track of the International Policy Studies degree program: “I am looking forward to gaining a different perspective from my studies in Brazil and to study in the less formal U.S. higher education system.” It did not take him long to sign up for the Globadores, the MIIS student soccer team—“it is so easy to bond over soccer,” he says with a big smile.
