MIIS Student Wins Interpreting Competition in England

Diplomatic Courier’s list of 99 top foreign policy leaders under the age of 33 includes 2010 MIIS graduate Aaron Stein, a nonproliferation specialist currently based in Turkey.
The popular four-year-old student club B.U.I.L.D. continues to offer free language lessons to both MIIS students and the wider Monterey community, with the addition this year of teacher seminars and curriculum support for new teachers.
Monterey Institute Professor Cas Shulman-Mora was joined by five current and former students this summer at the International Conference Interpretation Practicum she has taught and directed for the last three years in a former Spanish royal palace in Santander, Spain.
Launched last fall with 24 students, the Monterey Institute’s Master’s Degree Program in International Education Management continues to grow in popularity, adding 40 new students this fall.
Over 40 organizations, businesses and community groups presented their services and opportunities for students at the Monterey Institute’s annual Student Information Fair, helping the incoming class make connections early and make the most of their time in Monterey.
President Sunder Ramaswamy welcomed a diverse group of 388 new students from 32 countries, speaking 28 different native languages to the Monterey Institute, stressing their common identity as both “citizens of the world” and citizens of the Monterey Institute community.
Signaling continuous growth and expansion of academic programs, the Monterey Institute welcomed nine new faculty members this fall. The new faculty reflect the diverse campus, arriving from near and far and bringing a range of new experience and knowledge to share with students in different programs.
Reflecting back to her first days as a student at the Monterey Institute, alumna Miriam Fugfugosh says the warm and welcoming atmosphere extended “from orientation to graduation.” She remains part of this welcoming community as an active member of the robust international MIIS alumni network.
“Make the most of every opportunity,” is the advice recent Monterey Institute alumna Nathalie Marin-Gest gives current students. She used her connections from a summer internship at Fair Trade USA to land a full-time position in her chosen field by the time she graduated.
