Passion goes a long way. Looking back at my job search journey, I always had a better interview experience when I genuinely admired and wanted to work for the company. It’s hard for me to fake that passion. You do not have to “fall in love” with every company but there are ways to spark genuine interest.

Like many students who studied abroad, I was really interested in trying to find a way to make a career out of that experience. I looked into what skills that might involve, and I realized that it really is a professionalized field that needs a special skill set. The Middlebury Institute was a way for me to get that.

The best way to start a career is to set yourself apart from the crowd. MIIS is an important piece in any journey to strive for excellence in your career. Not only will it give you recognition in the field, but it will also give you the skills required to continue to earn recognition through awards, certifications, and successfully tackling your career market after graduation.
Best advice for a MIIS student today? Don’t be passive. Work with professors to design your own immersive learning projects, apply for funding, and get published. If you’re up for it, it’s a great way to do some hands-on learning that is a little more real world than perhaps a structured program.

Grad school is the place to try new and daunting things, where mistakes can become our greatest teachers. And you can only create more space for growth and success by nurturing curiosity. Also, ask your role models out to coffee and ask them how they found their path.
