CTEC Director and Middlebury Institute Professor Jason Blazakis was recently interviewed by news outlet RadioFreeEurope/RadioLiberty on the designation of the Russian Imperial Movement (RIM) by the U.S. Department of State, and how it impacts the group moving forward.

Professor Blazakis detailed the consequences of this designation, including the decision by many banks to cease serving individuals associated with the group, the inability of identified leaders to visit the United States, and the decreased ability to maintain influence via certain social media platforms. He also addressed some questions regarding widespread suspicion of the Kremlin’s involvement with RIM.

He emphasized the importance of this designation, stating the following:
“It is very important that right now - and there really has not been one - a right-wing organization promoting “white nationalism” is included in the “terrorist list”. Yes, this is unprecedented for the State Department. But around the world (and especially in the United States itself), there is a significant increase in extremism associated with the propaganda of white supremacy…”
