Director Blazakis spoke with VOA Persian about his thoughts on terrorist sanctions, free speech, and social media.

In particular, Blazakis discussed the US sanctioning of Iranian Foreign Minister Zarif, a prolific user of American-based social media platforms, and whether steps could be taken to remove his online social media content. Blazakis noted the ambiguity surrounding the protection of free speech on social media as it relates to terrorism recruitment and financing.

He also commented on the inconsistent choices made my social media companies in regards to the use of their platforms by Zarif or similar actors, stating: “They need to be more transparent about the decisions they make as it relates to taking down content or being more concrete about why they allow for content to arrive on their platforms.”
