Every year, the Monterey Trialogue hosts two closed-door conferences for experts and ex-officials from the United States, Russia, and China in fourth countries easily accessible to all participants.

  • A two-day “thematic trialogue,” held each May, examines the intersecting interests of the United States, China, and Russia in a particular subject area. The first “thematic trialogue” will take place in Belgrade, Serbia in late May 2024 and will focus on the Arctic. Future “thematic trialogues” will explore American, Chinese, and Russian perspectives on subjects such as outer space, nuclear weapons, and climate change. Each event will involve approximately 15 participants.

  • A three-day “regional trialogue,” held each November, combines wide-ranging discussion of the trilateral relationship with a narrower investigation of its ramifications in a particular geographical area. The event involves the active participation of experts from the host region and is, in effect, quadrilateral. The first “regional trialogue” took place in November 2023 in Tashkent and included approximately 30 participants from the US, China, Russia, and Central Asian countries. The next “regional trialogue” will be held in Cape Town in November 2024.
