The Monterey Trialogue: Tashkent involved approximately thirty academics and ex-officials from seven countries (USA, Russia, China, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Tajikistan). Participants discussed the US-Russia-China trilateral relationship; the three countries’ interactions with the peoples and governments of Central Asia; and areas of potential cooperation and conflict in the region. Panel topics included the future of Afghanistan, potential connections between Ukraine and Taiwan, and different visions of regional and global order. The group also met with the U.S. Ambassador to Uzbekistan, Jonathan Henick, and two former foreign ministers of Uzbekistan, Vladimir Norov and Sodiq Safoyev.

Participant Feedback

“Your dialogue is extraordinary. Nothing else like it out there … and so important.  I am struck by how you managed to recruit such a diverse group, put such substantive topics on the agenda, but still moderate a frank but respectful dialogue.”Karl Eikenberry, former U.S. Ambassador to Afghanistan and Lieutenant General, U.S. Army (retired)

“Now more than ever, conversations among Americans, Chinese, and Russians are difficult to have, and now more than ever, they are necessary. The inaugural trialogue was one of the most productive conferences in which I have participated. The thoughtfully constructed agenda generated candid and searching conversations — and hopefully long-lasting relationships.”Stephen Wertheim, Senior Fellow, Carnegie Endowment

“Outstanding … and it helps to maintain what Kissinger called the grand strategic triangle that is crucial for stability of the international system.”XIANG Lanxin, Distinguished Fellow, Stimson Center; Founding Director, Institute of Security Policy, China National Institute for SCO International Exchange and Judicial Cooperation
