CNS Security Expert Gives TEDx Talk on Nuclear Weapons and the War in Ukraine
| by Jessie Raymond
Sarah Bidgood, director of the James Martin Center’s Eurasia Nonproliferation Program, discussed Russia’s escalating nuclear threat.
VideoIn an article for Politico, Nonproliferation and Terrorism Studies Professor Avner Cohen and George Moore, Scientist-in-Residence at the James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies, described three potential scenarios in which Russia may deploy nuclear weapons against Ukraine.
In the article, co-written with Gregg Herken, Cohen and Moore write that while remote atmospheric testing would not have a severe impact on the ground, its psychological impact would still be powerful. Atmospheric detonation above Ukraine would cause an electromagnetic pulse that would short out communication devices. Most dangerous, and least likely, Russia could detonate a ground explosion in Ukraine.
