Here is some important information about planning for your arrival in Monterey.

We strongly suggest that you plan to arrive at least five to 10 days prior to the start of orientation to allow yourself enough time to secure housing and get settled in.

As Monterey is a popular tourist destination, especially during the summer months, it is highly recommended that you reserve a hotel room or space in the hostel well in advance of your arrival.

Temporary Lodging

It’s best to plan on staying in a hotel or motel for up to five nights so that you have a secured place to stay once you arrive in Monterey. It is not advisable to wait until you arrive to make your reservations.

You can find temporary lodging options by looking at this Google Lodging Map. Many offer discounts to students attending the Institute, so be sure to ask.

Emergency Housing

**Emergency housing is not guaranteed and is subject to availability**

If you are having a difficult time finding a rental property, emergency housing is available. These accommodations may be available with other students or staff members at a reasonable rate. However, there is no guarantee that such space will be available. If you’d like to know more about emergency housing options, contact Student Services.

Airport Information

Nearby Airports

San Francisco International Airport (SFO) is approximately 115 miles, or 185 kilometers, from campus.

San Jose International Airport (SJC) is approximately 75 miles, or 120 kilometers, from campus.

Monterey Regional Airport is an additional flight from a few major hubs (Denver, Phoenix, San Diego, San Francisco, Seattle, Dallas, Portland, Los Angeles or Las Vegas or International Airports) and can cost up to $100 or more. You will still need to arrange transportation to your hotel, apartment, or campus. The Monterey Airport, however, is very close to downtown Monterey and a short ride away.

Groome Transportation (formerly known as the Monterey Airbus)

Groome Transportation is a shared-ride airport shuttle service that operates between Monterey and the San Francisco International Airport (SFO) as well as the San Jose International Airport (SJC). The shuttle drops passengers off at Calle Principal, just two blocks from the Institute campus and walking distance to several local hotels. This is a reliable and affordable option. Visit their website to view schedules and fares and to book your reservation.

Taxis and Rideshares

The Yellow Cab taxi service can provide transportation. Uber, Lyft, and other rideshare services are also available in Monterey.
