The Center for the Blue Economy provides opportunities for Visiting Scholars who are interested in producing original research that serves our mission.

Overview

  • Eligibility: PhD or equivalent work experience in an ocean, coastal, or marine-related field; fluency in speaking and writing English
  • Requirements Produce a publishable working paper, give at least one public lecture and one research seminar in English, and be available to mentor students
  • Applications are judged by quality of education and expertise of the applicant, the relevance of proposed research to the Center for the Blue Economy’s mission and research interests, and letters of recommendation. Applications are accepted year-round. We will have a maximum of three visiting scholars per annum.
  • Duration: Six- to 18-month appointment
  • Funding: Funding must come from the scholars home university or outside sources; no funding is provided by the Center for the Blue Economy

The Center for the Blue Economy provides

  • Affiliation with the Center for the Blue Economy at the Middlebury Institute of International Studies
  • Office space, desk, computer, internet access, and telephone
  • Library privileges
  • Middlebury Institute email account
  • Middlebury Institute identification card

The Center for the Blue Economy does not provide

  • Funding
  • Housing
  • Health insurance (required for J-1 visa holders)
  • Reimbursement for visa application or SEVIS fees

Application

To apply, please submit the following materials to cbe@miis.edu with attention to the Center for the Blue Economy Program Manager:

  • Visiting Scholar Application
  • Current Curriculum Vitae
  • Two letters of recommendation
  • Statement of proposed research project, including its relevance to the mission of the Center for the Blue Economy (500-1000 words)

Determination

Decisions will be made on a case by case basis, typically within two weeks of receiving all application materials. A phone or Skype interview may be requested prior to making the final determination.

Upon determination, you will receive a signed letter of invitation from the Director of the Center for the Blue Economy, and work with the Program Manager on the J-1 visa process.
