Our mission at the Center for the Blue Economy is to provide economic and policy analysis that supports the development of a robust and equitable blue economy for the 21st century.

While many organizations focus generally on solving problems related to the oceans and coasts, the CBE focuses on the economic dimensions of ocean and coastal resource management challenges, and produces unique and widely-used economic databases on ocean and coastal economics. Our data is used by people across government, NGOs, and business and we are committed to free and open access.

The Center focuses much of its efforts on the interface of shoreline economies and the marine environment, which face extremely complex and dire consequences in this age of rapidly-rising sea levels, ocean acidification, and increased storm activity. All of the Center’s activities focus on real-world problems, addressing current marine challenges while seeking to anticipate those on the horizon through research, professional education, and collaboration.

Our Research

Our research focuses primarily on two key areas—1) helping organizations and governments measure their ocean and coastal economies in order to help guide policy, and 2) the economics of climate change adaptation in coastal regions.  While the Center examines economic activities in the open ocean—e.g., renewable energy, fisheries, and shipping—we devote most of our attention to issues in coastal zones, particularly building climate resilience and helping coastal communities adapt to climate impacts.  READ MORE
