“Middlebury Institute of International Studies’ Associate Professor Philipp C. Bleek and alumnus MA NPTS ‘15 Zachary Kallenborn publish “Drones of Mass Destruction: Drone Swarms and the Future of Nuclear, Chemical, and Biological Weapons” with War on the Rocks. The piece distills a longer article, “Swarming destruction: drone swarms and chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear weapons”, that they recently published in The Nonproliferation Review.

The article examines the implications of emerging drone swarm technologies for chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear (CBRN) weapons threats. Professor Bleek and Kallenborn explore both offensive and defensive implications, now and in the near term and speculating about what may emerge in future. They close by providing recommendations to how to best mitigate drone technology’s potential threats and capitalize on the opportunities it provides.
