If English is not your first language, you must provide evidence of English proficiency from the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), International English Language Testing System (IELTS) examinations, or Cambridge (B2 First, C1 Advanced, or C2 Proficiency).

  • TOEFL preferred minimum: 100
    • Sub-score minimum for Reading and Listening: 25
    • Sub-score minimum for Speaking: 23
    • Sub-score minimum for Writing: 27
  • IELTS preferred minimum: 7.0

  • Cambridge (B2 First, C1 Advanced, or C2 Proficiency) preferred minimum: 185
    • Sub-score minimum for Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing: 185

TOEFL and IELTS scores are valid for two years after the test date. Cambridge scores do not expire.

If necessary, you may have the opportunity to improve your English language skills through our English Preparation for Graduate Studies program, for which scholarships are available

Based on our review of your scores, English may be required as your language of study.

TOEFL/IELTS/Cambridge exemptions are automatically granted to applicants who have completed a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in the United States, Australia, Canada (except Quebec), Ireland, the United Kingdom, New Zealand, or Singapore. Please contact your enrollment advisor if you have any questions.

You can submit your online application without your TOEFL, IELTS, or Cambridge scores and provide them later via enroll@middlebury.edu.

Language Proficiency

  • You will work bi-directionally between your A and B languages. These programs therefore require native or near-native abilities in each of your languages of study.
  • You will submit a Language and Skills Test (LST) to demonstrate proficiency in each of your languages of study.
  • If you wish to pursue a third language, you will need to take an additional LST for this C language.
  • We highly recommend that you have more than six months of in-country experience using each of your languages of study.
  • You may take the LST once per admission cycle.
  • We do not provide individual feedback on the test.
  • If your test indicates that your skills are not currently at the level required to start one of our translation and interpretation programs, speak with your enrollment advisor about how you can work on improving your language skills in order to reapply another year.
  • There is no harm in reapplying and retaking the LST after improving your language skills.

Advanced Entry

You may be eligible to complete the degree in only two semesters through advanced entry, if you meet the following requirements:

  • You already have a master’s degree from a recognized translation and interpretation program or at least two years of full-time professional experience in the field of translation and/or interpretation AND
  • You test out of your first year of course work by taking the first year final exams. These exams will be administered after you are admitted to the program.

Please indicate that you would like to be considered for advanced entry on your online application.
