Middlebury Institute students took advantage of the wide variety of professional development courses and field work opportunities offered this winter term in five countries on four continents.
The Holland Center on the Middlebury Institute campus has reopened after extensive renovations and now features a new kitchen area, several study zones, and outdoor seating around a beautifully landscaped patio.
“We are the best recruiters,” say Monterey Institute students and U.S. Army Veterans Jens Wiik and Olga Volcsko, noting that a number of their military friends have joined them after hearing their stories about MIIS.
Celebrating fall traditions with a three-day festival, the Monterey Institute’s Student Council hosted events ranging from a chili cook-off to a corn husk tournament, offering international students a chance to experience beloved traditions from U.S. and Mexican culture.
Toastmaster Magazine recently highlighted the unique character of the MIIS Club, where members have partnered with the school’s translation and interpretation program to offer presentations in English, Spanish, Chinese, and Russian that are interpreted simultaneously into those four languages, Japanese, and French.

Even at a conference that attracts over 8000 international educators from around the world, it was hard to miss the large Monterey Institute delegation. Faculty, staff, students and alumni gave presentations and hosted sessions at the national NAFSA conference in San Diego.
After simulating nonproliferation treaty negotiations for a whole semester in class, three Monterey Institute students had the opportunity to experience the real event at the United Nations headquarters in New York.
The stakes are high as four Monterey Institute students travel to the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland later this month to participate in the final round of the Business for a Better World Competition, after beating out competitors from universities around the world.
The popular four-year-old student club B.U.I.L.D. continues to offer free language lessons to both MIIS students and the wider Monterey community, with the addition this year of teacher seminars and curriculum support for new teachers.
