Associate Professor Philipp Bleek and Zak Kallenborn published “Fellowship of the Drone” with CBRNe World. This article discusses the extant and potential CBRN implications of emerging drone swarm technology, identifying both novel threats and opportunities for bolstering defenses.

Applications of drone swarm technology that were until recently the domain of science fiction are or are soon likely to become reality. Although this technology can be used for wicked purposes, countermeasures for these attacks utilizing drone technology can also be developed. Bleek and Kallenborn call for government action to lower risks and leverage opportunities.

Bleek and alumnus MA NPTS ‘15 Zachary Kallenborn publish “Drones of Mass Destruction: Drone Swarms and the Future of Nuclear, Chemical, and Biological Weapons” with War on the Rocks. The piece distills a longer article, “Swarming destruction: drone swarms and chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear weapons”, that they recently published in the Nonproliferation Review.

The talk drew on Professor Bleek’s experience serving as a Senior Advisor to the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Nuclear, Chemical, and Biological Defense Programs in 2012 to 2013.
