Middlebury Institute graduates discuss where they are working today, how the Institute helped them get there, and what advice they’d give to current and future MIIS students.

My name is Juliana Struve and I graduated with an MA in International Education Management from the Middlebury Institute in 2018. My language of study was French. After graduating I was hired as a program coordinator with UC Berkeley Extension in Berkeley, California, where I later became an international student advisor. Today I am a college admissions coach in Long Beach, California.

While I was completing my International Education Management degree at the Institute, I worked remotely as a graduate assistant for Study California, a consortium of schools in California seeking to increase/sustain their international student enrollments. One of the board members of Study California worked at UC Berkeley Extension. When she found out I was looking for a job, she let me know that her office was hiring. I didn’t end up getting the initial position she recommended me for, but was hired for a different position shortly after that.

“My experience working on teams with folks from different backgrounds and the lessons I learned from those experiences made me an attractive job candidate.” – Juliana Struve MAIEM ’18

One thing I think that helped me stand out during the interview process was my coursework, specifically the fact that I had worked on projects with universities before. I also think that my experience working on teams with folks from different backgrounds and the lessons I learned from those experiences made me an attractive job candidate in the eyes of UC Berkeley Extension.

Network and Be Proactive

My best advice for current students is to take every opportunity you can to work with professionals who are already established in the field during your time at the Institute. When appropriate, don’t be afraid to mention to them that you are job hunting. You never know who they might know.
