Middlebury Institute graduates discuss where they are working today, how the Institute helped them get there, and what advice they’d give to current and future MIIS students.

My name is Patricia Berger, and I graduated with an MA in Translation and Interpretation from the Middlebury Institute in 2018. My languages of study were German and French. I work as a content manager at Deutsche Bahn, based in Frankfurt, Germany.

In my role, I am responsible for managing several Deutsche Bahn websites, where I create, edit, and implement content for both the German site and other language versions. What I love most about my job is that I get to apply my translation and editing skills while staying creative. When there are changes to our products and services, we update the sites in all languages. While we have our own translation department, I sometimes get the chance to translate or edit content myself, which is where I have the most fun. My job offers a lot of diversity, and even though it’s not explicitly in the field of translation or interpretation, I use my skills regularly.

Your time at MIIS will be stressful but so rewarding! Connect with other students and enjoy your time there.

I found this position by searching for jobs in my area and happened to come across it. Sometimes it’s just about timing!

What helped me most was the confidence I gained during my studies. Our professors reminded us that we’re highly trained professionals, and that made a lasting impact on me.

Go Beyond the Typical and Stay Open to New Opportunities

Your time at MIIS will be stressful but so rewarding! My best advice for current students: Connect as much as you can with other students and enjoy your time there. Also, when you start looking for jobs, go beyond the typical positions you might expect. Sometimes your dream job has a different title than you imagine. Don’t worry about finding the job right after graduation or the perfect internship during your studies. Every experience is valuable—even the challenging ones, because they help you learn more about yourself and what you want!
