Emeritus professor at the Middlebury Institute is remembered as a beloved teacher and accomplished researcher and author who taught courses on human security, international migration, multiculturalism, East Asia, and Russia-East Asia Relations.

Dr. Jan Knippers Black, professor emerita and a well-known Latin America scholar and human rights activist, passed away at home in Monterey on Sunday. She will be missed deeply by colleagues and friends, as well as the generations of MIIS students whom she mentored.
The Institute has established a new scholarship fund in honor of Professor Edgard Coly to support African students and students planning to pursue careers in Africa. Professor Coly, who passed away in March, was from Senegal and taught courses in French language and African issues for nearly 20 years at MIIS.
