Our mission at the Center for the Blue Economy is to promote ocean-based sustainability solutions through leadership in economic research, education, and policy analysis.
What is the “Blue Economy”?
The “Blue Economy” comprises the economic activities that create sustainable wealth from the world’s oceans and coasts. The center examines ways that ocean and coastal resources can support economic development and enhance healthy, resilient oceans and well-managed coastlines.
Our research focuses on two areas—helping organizations understand how to measure the size and changing nature of economic relationships with the oceans and coasts in order to guide choices and monitor progress, and the economics of climate change adaptation in coastal regions.
Stand with Us: Ocean Climate Action 2021
“It’s time for boldness because there is so much to do!” - President Joseph R. Biden.
The Biden Administration is committed to fighting climate change. All sectors of the ocean conservation and environmental justice community must act now to promote a new blue economy for the 21st century. Together, we will ensure that the Ocean Climate Action Plan (OCAP) is central to U.S. policy.

The Environmental Justice & Sustainability Speaker Series brings creative, pragmatic, and practice-based environmental professionals to campus. The series is primarily intended to support students in the International Environmental Policy program, but all lectures are open to the public. The series covers issues of environmental policy, social and environmental justice, and ocean sustainability, and is sponsored and hosted by the Center for the Blue Economy and the Nancy Eccles and Homer M. Hayward Family Foundation. We invite the public to come and be inspired by forward-thinking speakers who present cutting-edge solutions to complex problems across a wide variety of fields.
U.S. Officially Measures Blue Economy in GDP
June 2, 2020
For the first time, the U.S. Dept. of Commerce will officially measure the economic contributions of the oceans, coasts, and Great Lakes in national income accounts. The Center for the Blue Economy, Dr. Charles Colgan (CBE Director of Research) and the National Ocean Economics Program team (precursor and foundation of the CBE) have been innovating and advocating for 21 years to make this happen. The link above has more detail, and slides below show the first set of official statistics.
