Sullivan Finer Ulitskaya
Monterey Summer Symposium experts Jon Finer, Jake Sullivan and Lyudmila Ulitskaya.

The Monterey Initiative in Russian Studies (MIR) congratulates 2019 and 2020 Monterey Summer Symposium on Russia (MSSR) experts Jon Finer and Jake Sullivan on their appointments to the Biden administration, and welcomes renowned Russian writer Lyudmila Ulitskaya to MSSR 2021.

Jake Sullivan has been named National Security Advisor in the administration of President Joe Biden and Jon Finer has been named Deputy National Security Advisor. Over the past two summers these experts have shared insights on U.S.-Russian relations directly with MSSR fellows.

GIRS is proud to welcome renowned Russian writer Lyudmila Ulitskaya to MSSR 2021. Ulitskaya is the recipient of the first Russian Booker prize (2001), the prestigious Austrian State Prize for European Literature (2014), and two-time winner of the Russian National Literary Award Big Book (2007, 2016). Her novels include Sincerely Yours, Shurik; Daniel Stein, Interpreter; and Jacob’s Ladder.

This year’s symposium will be held online June 28 – August 4, 2021.
