A two-volume series The Darkest Sides of Politics by professor Jeffrey Bale has been published by Routledge Press. The first volume focuses on the history of underground neo-fascist networks around the world since World War II, while the second volume looks at religious extremists, the threat of CBRN (chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear) terrorism and the nexus between organized criminal and extremist groups.
The U.S. Department of State has announced the selection of Lisa Donohoe of the Middlebury Institute of International Studies (MIIS) at Monterey for an English Language Specialist project focusing on curriculum development for diplomats and civil servants in Ukraine at the Diplomatic Academy and Civil Service Agency.
Kieran Ficken (Joint MBA/MA International Environmental Policy), Libiao Pan (MA in Nonproliferation and Terrorism Studies), Margo Poda (Joint MBA/MA in International Policy and Development), and Hayley Manges (BA in International Politics and Economics) will conduct field research in Vladivostok and Khabarovsk in March 2018.

From the GSIPM blog: For this month’s DPMI spotlight, we spoke with January 2018 DPMI Rwanda participant Tyler Henry. Tyler is a returned Peace Corps volunteer who served in both the Ukraine and in Cameroon. Currently, he is completing his final semester in the MPA program specializing in monitoring and evaluation. He spoke to us about why he chose DPMI Rwanda vs DPMI in the US, challenges he faced during his time in Rwanda, takeaways from the experience, and provided advice for anyone interested in participating in DPMI in the future.
This year’s Olympics Games featured at least 10 interpreters who are faculty, former faculty, or alumni of the Middlebury Institute.
Nonproliferation and Terrorism Studies (NPTS) Program Chair Jeffrey Knopf publishes article in Contemporary Security Policy. The article is part of a special issue on Nuclear Norms in Global Governance. This special issue was co-edited by NPTS professor Avner Cohen and Maria Rost Rublee from Monash University in Australia.
