With increased reports of the very infectious Delta variant throughout California, the Monterey County Department of Health released new guidance on Monday recommending that everyone, regardless of vaccination status, wear masks indoors in public places and in crowded outdoor situations. The press release stated “Businesses are urged to adopt universal masking requirements for customers entering indoor areas of their businesses to provide better protection to their employees and customers. This will also make it easier for businesses to be sure unvaccinated people are masked.”

I am writing to share with you our plans for the staged return to activity at the Middlebury Institute of International Studies campus this fall. With the reopening of California on June 15 and the widespread availability of the COVID-19 vaccine, many of the restrictions of the past 15 months on the use of campus space will be substantially eliminated. Our campus will partially reopen on July 1, with a more complete reopening beginning on August 16. Our plans are predicated on continuing public health guidance and requirements to protect and promote your safety and that of the entire campus community.

Our return-to-campus team is busy finalizing our plans and policies for fall semester. We are using California Department of Public Health and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines to inform our policies for in-person, on-site activities. Look for a detailed announcement by July 1 that will outline final guidelines for fall semester. We will also update our return-to-campus website with details at that time.
